Scipion is an application framework to help the Structural Biology community to process Cryo Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM) data. The Scipion on demand service provides researchers with a ready to use installation where they can continue processing data acquired at a microscope facility. The service is initially offered to ESFRI INSTRUCT users, however, the transparent use of EOSC computing services makes it possible to scale the service to wider communities.

The ScipionCloud service could benefit from collaboration with Research Organizations and/or Universities willing to improve the application or provide infrastructure resources to increase service capacity. It will also be useful to get technical help from such organisations to work on improvements in implementation or architecture.

The ScipionCloud service is operational and has been tested and used by a number of real users. Current drawback for a wider exploitation is the limit of existing hardware infrastructure that supports the service. However there are plans for overcoming this by trying a different approach that will use a hybrid cloud-HPC infrastructure.
The service code is open source and can be reused to be replicated or extended following the License terms (GPL 3.0). Code can be found in this github repository.
The ScipionCloud service can be maintained by the BCU group at CNB-CSIC as part of the Instruct Image Processing Center tasks. However for the service to be operational there need to be agreements with cloud sites willing to offer enough hardware resources for real usage. Other business model could be to offer the service for free but charge for the computational resources behind, either using public or research clouds.
