Result description
New-age Energy Performance Certificates are envisioned to expand their scope beyond an asset-based assessment and cover building operation-related aspects concerning the building’s energy efficiency, the comfort and well-being of its occupants, and its level of smartness. To this end, actual energy consumption and ambient condition measurements from the building’s deployed IoT infrastructure need to be collected and processed. Moreover, the information obtained needs to be valid and adequate for the trustworthy issuance of a modern performance certificate. D^2EPC’s Information Management Layer (IML) is equipped with the appropriate modules and algorithms designed to gather data from different building IoT infrastructures and constantly monitor the operation of the deployed metering and sensing equipment. This component further enables the assessment of streaming data from a quality/quantity scope over time, guaranteeing the usability of the extracted information. Within D^2EPC, the IML is also materialised through Energy Performance Verification and credibility.

Based on the current status, building data are gathered and processed, but the data exchange is not standardised. By collecting data and exploring possible synergies, it could raise awareness and trigger policy alterations in the future.

The module has been locally developed and tested (offline) with historic pilot datasets. At this stage, it is integrated into the D^2EPC system architecture and has already been demonstrated in real building cases. The sampling, though, is not representative, and the tool should be applied to numerous pilot cases to optimise its operation. In addition, no private investors are sought, but the effort is still focused on showcasing, validating, and enhancing the tool in diverse environments and use cases through EC-funded projects and support actions to test the tool until it’s ready for commercialisation.
The Information Management Tool module is able to support a high number of IoT devices without limiting its scope to fewer or smaller-scale buildings.
The tool has a simple implementation based on well-established frameworks and libraries utilised by developers all around the globe. It is potentially replicable because it is a flexible tool that may also operate in a non-centralised manner.
The tool sets its grounds on data extraction, device monitoring, and data validation. Within D^2EPC, It may be focused on particular metrics that regard the building operation but, with minor modifications, its utilisation can be expanded to other case studies from the building industry. Thus, it is characterised as a sustainable tool.
