COGNITUS content adaptation component is capable of enhancing non-UHD content, including UGC and archived material, and creating UHD compliant content, which can be used in broadcasting. This component targets the standard UHD format characteristics in videos and, after assessing the content quality, creates videos with high spatial resolution, high frame rate, high dynamic range and compliant with ITU-R BT.2020 colour gamut. The module also provides useful information to the encoder to maximise the video quality associated with enhanced UGC. Using UGC and archived material that have been enhanced to the UHD format will improve the quality of professional broadcasts and users’ QoE. Although designed for upscaling and creating high quality content, COGNITUS content adaptation also includes the downscaling tools that are implemented to provide HD format solutions for the devices that are not capable of showing UHD content.

R&D, Technology and Innovation aspects
The technology is near production ready. BBC in the UK and at FORTHNET in Greece have successfully trialled installations. Deployments were launched at high profile cultural entertainment and sports events across both countries. UGC video content was captured, enhanced and enriched by the COGNITUS technology components, and validation was provided by UGC contributors and producers.
