Enabling Technologies for Resilient R&D Supply Chains in Quantum Technologies

The BMBF funds pre-competitive R&D consortia projects within the framework of its “Quantum Systems” program to develop novel or significantly improved enabling technologies for quantum computing and quantum sensing. The program targets both technical challenges (e.g. in optics, cryogenics, electronics, vacuum technology) and geopolitical risks (e.g. supply disruptions).

Projects must demonstrate impact in terms of scalability, reliability, reproducibility, usability, economic feasibility, and geopolitical availability of quantum device technology. Cooperation between research and industry is explicitly encouraged, especially for companies that have not yet been active in the quantum technology sector.

Only consortia with at least one system integrator company are eligible. The project must address at least one concrete application scenario.

Participation Requirements:

  • Applicants: Companies, universities, and non-university research institutions with legal entity in Germany

  • Only consortia (collaborative projects) are eligible

  • Funding rate: up to 100% for non-economic actors; companies must contribute own funds

  • Results must be used in Germany, EEA or Switzerland

Deadlines (two-stage process):

  • Project outlines by November 30, 2024, September 30, 2025, September 30, 2026

Expected Outcome

The objective is to accelerate the development of quantum computing and sensing technologies and to strengthen Europe’s technological sovereignty. This will be achieved through improved technical specifications and enhanced reliability, reproducibility, usability, economic feasibility, and resilient supply chains—especially for critical enabling technologies. The program also promotes new collaborations and exploitation paths.

Scope

The program funds pre-commercial R&D consortia developing enabling technologies for quantum computing and sensing. Objectives include enhanced technical specifications, scalability, reliability, reproducibility, usability, economic feasibility, and availability. Example areas:

  • Heterogeneous component integration (e.g., on-chip)

  • Scalable control electronics

  • Advanced lasers and optics

  • Miniaturized vacuum systems

  • Low-maintenance cryogenics

Technologies must be demonstrated in a specific application case.

Das BMBF fördert im Rahmen des Programms „Quantensysteme – Spitzentechnologien entwickeln, Zukunft gestalten.“ vorwettbewerbliche Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekte, die neuartige oder signifikant verbesserte Enabling Technologies für Quantentechnologien (v. a. Quantencomputer und Quantensensorik) entwickeln. Ziel ist es, sowohl technische Herausforderungen (z. B. in Optik, Kryotechnik, Elektronik, Vakuumtechnik) als auch geopolitische Risiken (z. B. durch Lieferengpässe) zu adressieren.

Die Projekte sollen zur Skalierbarkeit, Zuverlässigkeit, Reproduzierbarkeit, Bedienbarkeit, Wirtschaftlichkeit und geopolitischen Verfügbarkeit von quantentechnologischer Gerätetechnik beitragen und dabei Kooperationen zwischen Wissenschaft und Wirtschaft stärken. Besonders Unternehmen, die bisher nicht mit Forschungseinrichtungen im Bereich Quantentechnologien zusammengearbeitet haben, werden zur Teilnahme ermutigt.

Förderfähig sind ausschließlich Verbundprojekte mit mindestens einem Systemintegrator-Unternehmen. Es muss mindestens ein konkreter Anwendungsfall adressiert werden.

Teilnahmebedingungen:

  • Antragsteller: Unternehmen, Hochschulen, außeruniversitäre Forschungseinrichtungen mit Sitz/Niederlassung in Deutschland

  • Förderfähig sind nur Konsortien (Verbundprojekte)

  • Förderquote bis 100 % für nicht-wirtschaftliche Partner; Unternehmen mit Eigenbeteiligung

  • Ergebnisse müssen in Deutschland, EWR oder der Schweiz genutzt werden
