Transfer and Network Integration of Quantum Communication

The funding initiative supports projects aimed at accelerating the transfer of quantum communication technologies into practical applications and their integration into existing and future Information and Communication Technology (ICT) networks. The programme is part of the German government's IT security research framework "Digital. Secure. Sovereign." and focuses on enhancing Germany's technological sovereignty in quantum communication.

Who and What is funded:

  • Application-oriented research projects focused on integrating quantum communication into ICT networks and practical applications.
  • Research into innovative protocols, hardware and software solutions, security proofs, field tests in real-world conditions, novel network architectures, and secure transmission of quantum states.
  • A coordinating umbrella project enhancing networking, synergy utilization, and technology transfer.

Eligible participants:

  • Universities, research institutions
  • Authorities and their research facilities
  • Commercial enterprises
  • Municipalities and municipal institutions
  • Associations, non-profit organisations

Participation by SMEs and start-ups is encouraged.

Key participation conditions:

  • Interdisciplinary collaboration is required.
  • Research must significantly surpass current scientific/technical standards with considerable risk involved.
  • Funded results must be used in Germany, the EEA, or Switzerland.

Deadlines:

  • Umbrella project: 31 March 2025
  • Application-oriented projects: 31 March 2025, 30 November 2025, and 30 November 2026

Expected Outcome

The programme aims to sustainably strengthen Germany's quantum communication innovation ecosystem, secure technological sovereignty, and accelerate the transfer into market-ready applications. Indicators include increased product innovations, patents, start-ups, and end-user engagements in quantum communication, improved international standards contributions, scientific publications, and enhanced industry-academia collaboration.

Scope

Funding supports research addressing practical quantum communication applications, such as performance enhancement, miniaturisation, interoperability, robustness, secure integration into ICT networks, field tests, novel network architectures, and quantum information processing. It also funds an umbrella project coordinating networking activities, knowledge transfer, and technology monitoring, enhancing synergy effects, and identifying emerging research themes.

Die Maßnahme ist Teil des Forschungsrahmenprogramms der Bundesregierung zur IT-Sicherheit „Digital. Sicher. Souverän.“ und zielt auf die Stärkung der technologischen Souveränität Deutschlands im Bereich der Quantenkommunikation.

Was und wer wird gefördert:

  • Anwendungsorientierte Forschungsvorhaben zur Integration von Quantenkommunikationssystemen in IKT-Netze.
  • Erforschung innovativer Protokolle, Hard- und Softwarelösungen, Sicherheitsnachweise, Feldtests unter realen Bedingungen, neuartige Netzarchitekturen, sichere Übertragung von Quantenzuständen.
  • Ein koordinierendes Dachprojekt zur Vernetzung, Synergienutzung und Technologietransfer.

Teilnahmeberechtigte:

  • Hochschulen, Forschungseinrichtungen
  • Behörden und deren Forschungseinrichtungen
  • Unternehmen der gewerblichen Wirtschaft
  • Kommunen und kommunale Einrichtungen
  • Verbände, Non-Profit-Organisationen

KMU und Start-ups werden besonders unterstützt.

Wichtige Teilnahmebedingungen:

  • Interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit ist erforderlich.
  • Forschung muss deutlich über den aktuellen Stand hinausgehen und mit erheblichem Risiko verbunden sein.
  • Ergebnisse dürfen nur in Deutschland, im EWR oder in der Schweiz genutzt werden.
